Six Songs Without Words – Set Nineteen
Song number 1 in B major – Vivo (Listen using the link below)
Song number 2 in G♯ minor – Poco lento (and for this song we have provided a helpful enharmonic version too – which you can view here) This song has a structure of verse-chorus twice over. The piece begins with the flavour of a two-part Invention; indeed, verse two opens with the same music but the texture inverted. In other regards there is a strong element of melancholic romanticism, especially in the expansive texture and rich harmonies of the refrain and also in the modulation to the mediant minor in verse two. Such is the chromaticism of the piece, a pair of enharmonic scores have been produced in G sharp and A flat minors, enabling pianists to choose between double sharps and double flats.
