Six Songs without Words – Set One
This first set of Six Songs without Words was started somewhere over the North Atlantic on 28th December 2016 and finished at home in Worcester early in 2017. The set comprises six vignettes of contrasting character from the sunny outdoor feel of the opening lyrical song through the lonely plaintive feel of the second, to the flowing Mendelssohnian feel of the fourth and the tragic character of the fifth. Song Six explores a 10/8 metre with 2 beats per bar divided into quintuplets – something which I return to in subsequent sets.
